Tesla’s IP given away: “another proof that IP has no value”?

That is a recurring question or statement made these days.This case is sometimes used to show that “IP does not create value”.

Well, in my opinion, it first shows that Tesla has technical superiority and therefore that their innovations although pioneering are a credible alternative to established, dominant models.

Secondly, it also aims to attract followers into Tesla’s new ecosystem and therefore to create a network effect.

Thirdly, it is also a comm / PR thing which brings reputation and buzz around Tesla business and products; that’s another way to exploit the value of IP portfolio with non-financial direct compensation (while others prefer licensing, enforcement through litigation, spin-offs with job creation …).
